Rose otto steam-distilled from Rosa damascena in the Bulgarian Rose Valley. Yield is on the order of three to four tonnes of flower per kilogram of oil, harvested within a window of roughly three to four weeks — the entire explanation for the price.

Otto differs from absolute in a way that matters practically: it contains natural paraffins which cause it to solidify below roughly 20 °C. This is normal and reverses on gentle warming. It is not an adulteration indicator, and an otto that stays liquid in the cold warrants a question.

The profile is transparent, crystalline and cool on the open, with a green-spicy edge and a honeyed rose heart.
