Rough diamonds: the Kimberley Process.

Since 2003, the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme has required every international shipment of rough diamonds between participants to carry a government certificate.

01

What the scheme requires

  • Rough diamonds may be traded only with other Kimberley Process participants.
  • Each shipment travels in a tamper-resistant container with a government-validated KP certificate.
  • Participants must have national legislation and import and export controls in place.
  • Traders keep records and issue the World Diamond Council's System of Warranties statement on invoices.
Since 2024, G7 countries restrict imports of Russian-origin diamonds, so buyers increasingly ask for evidence of the country of mining.

How ARAM handles diamonds

We handle rough-diamond enquiries only from verified companies, and only where the producer holds KP registration in its country. Polished stones and jewellery are outside our scope.
