Ethiopian frankincense comes predominantly from Boswellia papyrifera, a species distinct from the Boswellia carterii of the Somali coast, with a noticeably brighter and more turpenic profile. Ethiopia is one of the origins where processing capacity at source is increasing, which is directly relevant to the value-addition question our African Origin Project is concerned with.

Trade considerations

Boswellia papyrifera populations are under documented pressure from land-use change and harvesting intensity. We treat regeneration and harvesting-interval questions as part of supplier assessment.

Materials from Ethiopia1

A material is only shown under an origin where that origin is attached to its record. We do not infer origin from a trade name, and we do not list a country because it sounds right for the material.
