Labdanum resinoid produced from the gum exuded by the leaves and stems of Cistus ladanifer, harvested principally in Spain.
The material is the backbone of the amber accord and one of the most useful fixatives in natural perfumery. It reads as ambery, leathery and sweet-balsamic with a dry, faintly animalic, tobacco-like depth.
Supplied as a dark, extremely viscous to semi-solid mass. It requires warming and is normally handled as a dilution.
