Cape chamomile is distilled from Eriocephalus punctulatus, an endemic of the South African Cape. Despite the common name it is not closely related to Roman or German chamomile.
The oil is deep blue from chamazulene formed during distillation, and it is softer, fruitier and more herbaceous than either European chamomile. There is a distinctive apple-and-hay quality to it that has no real equivalent elsewhere.
Production volumes are small. This is exactly the category of indigenous African aromatic material our African Origin Project is concerned with.
